Dalit-Jat clash leaves one dead, dozens injured

After Saharanpur, sectarian violence rocked Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district in which one person was killed and around two dozen were injured.

According to the police sources here, members of Dalit and Jat communities clashed at Gejha village in the district following a dispute over a trivial issue on Monday night.

Police said that violence sparked off after a youth of Jat community allegedly made an objectionable remark on a Dalit man, who was passing by.

The alleged comments triggered a violent reaction from the Dalits of the village, who attacked the house of the Jat youth. Around two dozen people from both sides were injured in the clash.

A Jat youth, identified as Pintu Chaudhary, who had suffered serious injuries, died in the hospital late in the night triggering tension in the village.

Two persons have been arrested in connection with the killing, the police said adding that security personnel in strength had been deployed in the village to prevent clashes and maintain law and order.
